Population Distribution in the United Kingdom
The total population of the United Kingdom is just under 60 million. Despite the high population figures in terms of area, there are many regions outside of the cities that are fairly isolated and thinly inhabited.
The big proportion of the around 50 million population in England live in or close to the industrial and commercial areas around London, Birmingham and the Midlands and the Northwest of England (there is a huge population belt that runs from Liverpool, through Manchester and across the Pennines to Leeds.)
In Wales with a total population of almost three million, habitation is concentrated in the south near the cities of Cardiff and Swansea.
The majority of Scotland’s population of just over five million is concentrated in or near Glasgow and Edinburgh.
For Northern Ireland the heaviest population concentration is in or near Belfast – the total population of Northern Ireland is under two million.
