St Helier, JSY Castles & Stately Homes
• A WorldWeb.com Travel Guide to Castles & Stately Homes in St Helier, JSY, Channel Islands.
This large fortress was the spot for the defense of Jersey for over 300 years, from the times of the Elizabethans until the German occupation in World War II. Military exhibits, the home of the sixth century hermit St Helier and gorgeous views of the sea are just a few of the reasons to visit Elizabeth Castle. Listen for the noonday gun, which continues to be fired each day.
Dating back to the 13th century, this castle has seen calm as well as storm. Both the Normans and the French recognized the value of occupying the Channel Islands, and used this area at separate times. The sea and cliffs provided protection on three sides of Mont Orgueil Castle, making it a very strategic military location. Today the castle is well maintained and offers an awe-inspiring photographic opportunity. Open all year (hours vary), also called Gorey Castle.
