Welcome to Jersey!
Situated just off the coast of Normandy, France—in the Bay of St. Michel—is the small but distinctive island of Jersey. Together with Guernsey, the island is best known as one of the Channel Islands and is a place of unspoiled landscapes, temperate climate and a unique blend of British and French culture. The islands are not officially part of the United Kingdom but have been considered British since 1066. Prior to the 19th century, fishing, shipbuilding and agriculture were the cornerstones of Jersey life, but developments in transportation brought visitors to the island and its tourism traffic continues today, along with a healthy trade of offshore investing. The Jersey Museum in St. Helier speaks to this history, as does the Mont Orgueil Castle in St. Martin. Built in the 13th century, the castle dominates the harbour at Gorey and is considered one of the best preserved British castles around. Rivaling Jersey’s history are its outdoors. Pristine, white-sand beaches and coastal cliffs adorn its coasts while the isle itself is home to many outstanding private gardens, many of which open several times a year to the public. Flower fiends can also time a visit to coincide with the Battle of Flowers, an annual parade held since 1902, or visit the award-winning Eric Young Orchid Foundation.
